The space/time trend of unemployment in Britain by counties, 1978-1990.

National Information System counts, showing deviation from expected levels of unemployment in 64 counties on equal population cartograms software by author on an Archimedes computer.

The same pattern as is shown at the amalgamated office area scale (Plate XC) is drawn. However, here we need the higher resolution to be able to tell that this impression is correct, and not an artifact of the areal units chosen. In London some of the most and least prosperous places exist, but cannot be seen as they cancel each other out. The southern spot, dark in later years, is the Isle of Wight, an interesting anomaly.
