The distribution of 1st placed parties in the 1987 British general election (Colour).

Five possible outcomes are shown by distinct colouring of each of the 650 parliamentary constituencies on the equal electorate cartogram (Appendices B and C) software by author on an Archimedes computer.

The geographical pattern is obvious. The boundaries of the major conurbations and nations are included for reference. Only a few constituencies are isolated from the main groups Oxford East and Norwich South for Labour, Tynemouth and Edinburgh West for the Conservatives; while the Celtic fringe of Liberals, Nationalists and other parties in Northern Ireland is still easily seen.
