The distribution of employment in Britain, 1981 (Colour).

Three colour mixing of 129,211 census enumeration districts on an equal population cartogram software by author on an Archimedes computer. These distributions show a well defined set of patterns. Concentrations of both unemployed and inactive (orange) adults dominate many areas of the country including all the large inner cities and the Welsh coalfields. The South coast is highlighted by high proportions the inactive (most retired) group. There is also a ring around London where those in work dominate and the other two groups do not live in any great numbers.
