1981 equal population grid squares.

From the smoothed enumeration district cartogram using squares of approximately 30,000 people each, shown here on an equal land area map using software written by the author on Archimedes and Sun computers.

If you did want to map grid squares, perhaps this lattice would be most appropriate. London, as expected, contains the mostly densely packed single square of three million people. The inability of the cartogram to cope with the scattered communities of the Western Isles can be clearly seen.
