The evolution of a cartogram of population by County.

Ten stages in the development of a cartogram based on the 1981 census populations of 64 counties are shown, illustrating the mechanics of some of the software written by the author on an Archimedes computer.

The picture gives an idea of the dynamics of the interactive graphical techniques which were used to develop the cartogram algorithm. The West Midlands circle in the centre can be seen to have hardly moved at all, whereas Kent was catapulted by Greater London, to become the southernmost county in this population space.
