Migration flows between all regions in 1976 - flows sorted by contiguity order.

Source: national information system records for the 17 European level II regions on an equal regional population cartogram - software by author on an Archimedes computer.

The flows are greatest between the Metropolitan areas and their surrounding hinterlands - London and the rest of the South East, the West Midlands conurbation and region, and so on. The largest inter-regional flows are between the South East and its neighbours, as well as Scotland. Showing all possible flows is not a good way of seeing the pattern of migration streams. At this level of resolution what is shown is also largely influenced by the positions of the boundaries of the areas used.
