Travel-to-work Areas - annotated base map shaded by unemployment rate.

Continuously shaded for 322 areas from the 1981 census figures on an equal land area map with annotation applied automatically - software by author on an Archimedes computer.

These areas were created for the Department of Employment as being the most appropriate for the presentation of unemployment levels and other statistics. Notice that Corby is back as the single highest rate of unemployment, but the Scottish islands are now more accurately labelled with names like “Islay”.

Seventh print from a series of ten.
