Continuously shaded for 97 areas from the 1981 census figures on an equal land area map with annotation applied automatically - software by author on an Archimedes computer.
Family practitioner areas are, usually, amalgamations of local government districts into which doctor’s practices are grouped. These are the areas for which migration rates are calculated for the years between the censuses. This is because National Health Service patients re-register with a new doctor when they move between places. Migration figures between Scottish health boards are not given, so that country is shown as a single unit.
