Land use in Britain by 1km square grid (Colour).

One kilometre national grid squares of land use from the Merlewood classification, 1980, on an equal land area projection - software written by author on an Archimedes computer.

Agricultural land grades one, two and three are shown by yellow, orange and brown. Notice how little land is urban and how the northern cities nest in the eaves of upland areas. There is certainly a north/south divide in the quality of land for agricultural purposes.
