Land use close-up of Northern Britain (Colour).

1980 Merlewood classification showing nine categories of land use by 1km squares - software by author on an Archimedes computer.

The image is centred on the land-use pattern of the North East of England. Tyneside, Wearside and Carlisle can be distinguished, as can the pattern of farmland and other landscapes. We do not know very much about the physical geography of Britain, nationally digitally, at a higher resolution than this. It is for information about people which society is willing to pay.
