The Transformed map of voting in the 1987 British general election (Colour).

One frame taken from the end of an animation showing the 633 mainland parliamentary constituencies, coloured by the mix of voting in 1987, having been transformed from an equal land area to equal population projection software by author on an Archimedes computer.

This illustration shows an alternative method of producing area cartograms. Here the actual boundaries of the constituencies have been transformed using the enumeration district cartogram as a template. This was done to allow a film of the process to be made, to which this was the final frame. It also produces a more continuous area cartogram, if that is desired, but at the added cost of introducing a complex set of boundaries into the image.
