Travel time from the Tyneside road network (Colour).

The major roads were digitized by the author, who wrote the software on an Archimedes computer to show time distance as a repeated series of red to green bands of equal accessibility.

The travel-time map was grown from the road network. Here eight frames from that program are shown. The boundaries become more rounded as the process continued. This map could be transformed into a surface with the roads as either the bottoms of valleys, or the ridges of mountains.
