The space/time trend of unemployment in Britain by rings, 1978-1990.

The 64 counties are each drawn 12 times, shaded by the deviation from the expected rate of unemployment, given the time and the place, on the equal population cartogram in an isometric perspective software by author on an Archimedes computer.

Here the relative fortunes of counties are showing rising up through time. This was a particularly disastrous attempt to show three-dimensional structure, included to show what can easily go wrong. Frequently you can only find out if a method will produce a satisfactory picture by actually creating one.
