The 459 districts are coloured according to the rates of change in their total populations between four census years (OPCS 1991), drawn on the equal (1981) population cartogram — software by author on an Archimedes computer.
This graphic shows the change in population over three decades. Little has altered in the rates of change, what has altered is highlighted. The major conurbations have lost population continuously, while the home counties ring has gained people. However, some interesting clusters, and patterns of particular colours do stand out.
