Ray traced images of grey shades of shadow and light by public domain software on an Archimedes computer. Height of the surface shows the rate of divergence of each point on the complex plane, to infinity.
The Mandelbrot and Julia sets essentially trace out one-dimensional lines in two-dimensional space. These are of such complexity, however, that a three-dimensional projection can be illuminating. These pictures are of simple equations, we should expect pictures of the patterns of life to be more interesting, and at least as complicated as these.
