The use of contours without colour to depict surface height.

50 meters contours digitized from Scottish ordinance survey maps on a slightly skewed equal land area projection software by author on an Archimedes computer.

Without some other indication we have no idea whether a particular slope is rising or falling on a contour diagram. It is also difficult to gauge where the highest points may lie. Contour diagrams do not show the shape of surfaces that well.
