The distributions of second placed party, 1955-1987 (Colour).

Six distinct colours are used to represent the possible runner-up parties in 705 consistent constituencies over ten elections on the changing equal electorate cartograms (Appendices B and C) software written by author on an Archimedes computer.

The change in the order of second place party over time is actually much more interesting than that of the winners. The geography of the rise of the Liberals (and then Alliance) is dramatic, as they spread around the south. The rise of the nationalists in October, 1974, was also outstanding.
